What El Chalten is known for

El Chalten is a village of fewer than two thousand people where the Patagonian steppe breaks against the Andes. Argentina created it by an act of government in 1985 to hold a contested border, and in December 2014 Law 27,055 named it National Capital of Trekking. The town runs almost entirely on trekking and hiking tourism to the peaks above.

A border that needed residents

In the valley below Mount Fitz Roy, gusts pass 70 km/h on the windiest days, October to March. Andreas Madsen ranched the site from the early 1900s, and climbers came after the first ascent in 1952. Argentina and Chile both claimed Lago del Desierto, where Chilean settlers like Domingo Sepulveda lived.

To make the claim stick, Argentina wanted residents on the ground before any court weighed the maps. A country cannot hold contested ground it does not occupy. A town had to be built around a draw that already existed.

Founding a town by act of government

El Chalten was founded on October 12, 1985, with a hosteria, a bridge and surveyed streets. The province built thirteen houses and handed out keys in November 1987, and public employees and gendarmes arrived in 1988. Arbitration settled the border in Argentina’s favor in 1994.

What the trekking capital earns

Law 27,055, passed in December 2014, named the town National Capital of Trekking. Dozens of restaurants and hotels now serve the trekkers, about three hours by road from the airport at El Calafate.

Why it worked

El Chalten made its purpose official and then built for it. The town was an instrument of foreign policy, placed to occupy a disputed line, but tourism sat in the founding case from the start: Governor Arturo Puricelli rested his argument on natural beauty that would grow a tourist industry.

Rather than let the outpost fade once the border was secure, Argentina wrote the trekking capital identity into national law. The mountains were always there. The gateway was built.
