What Gaiman is known for
Gaiman is a small town in the arid lower Chubut valley on the Patagonian steppe, settled by Welsh tradesmen and miners who had to learn farming from scratch. It is known for Welsh afternoon tea, served in casas de te. UN Tourism named it a Best Tourism Village in 2024.
Welsh settlers on gravel
Welsh settlers came to Tehuelche country on the lower Chubut in the 1860s to save their language. Tailors, cobblers and miners, few of them farmers, they nearly starved on the gravel plain, then traded bread for Tehuelche meat and learned to irrigate. Gaiman rose on that ditch-fed farmland in 1874. Wheat thinned, Welsh faded.
Gaiman sits about twenty minutes from Trelew’s airport, but the tourist traffic ran to the coast and Peninsula Valdes. As wheat farming declined over the century after 1874, its one distinction was cultural: Welsh, improbably and stubbornly, in Argentina.
Selling a domestic ritual
The town sold its domestic ritual. Welsh afternoon tea, cakes and the black torta negra became a product in casas de te. Rival houses fought so openly that scholars named it the War of the Tea Houses. In 1995 Princess Diana helicoptered in for a cup at Ty Te Caerdydd, whose owner still keeps that cup unwashed, though the house has been shut since 2020.
What the tea earns
Farming still pays the bills and the tea brings the visitors. A small town supports rival tea houses, Welsh festivals and eisteddfod-style gatherings, and visitors detour off the Puerto Madryn and Peninsula Valdes circuit for an afternoon in a Welsh parlor.
Why it worked
Gaiman stopped competing on scenery and competed on culture. It has no coast or glaciers to match the rest of Patagonia, so it sold what it did have: Welsh afternoon tea in Argentina. People do not cross a continent for tea. They cross it for Welsh tea on the steppe.
That identity is neither exclusive nor inherited. UN Tourism’s 2024 list named Gaiman alongside Trevelin, another Welsh tea town in Chubut, and Ty Te Caerdydd, where Diana drank, opened in 1994 under owners of Spanish and Polish descent.
