What Rockport is known for

Rockport is a town of roughly 7,000 people on the tip of Cape Ann, known for one red fishing shack nicknamed Motif No. 1 and for its artists. The town traded quarries and cod for easels and day-trippers, and the shack is reputedly the most-painted building in America. Today Rockport counts more than thirty galleries along Bearskin Neck and Main Street.

Granite, cod and then a question

For most of the nineteenth century Rockport lived on granite and cod, its stone building piers and post offices up the Eastern Seaboard. Then the quarries closed and the fishing fleet thinned. A remote town at the end of a peninsula had to ask what it had left.

What it had left was the light, the hard Atlantic glare that had drawn painters to Cape Ann for decades, and to one fishing shack on Bearskin Neck. The town had to stop treating those artists as summer visitors and start treating them as an industry.

Making painting official

In 1921 local artists organized the Rockport Art Association, and the village leaned into an identity built on the act of painting itself. It made a civic mascot of one red fish house, nicknamed Motif No. 1. When the shack collapsed in the Blizzard of 1978, the town rebuilt it plank for plank.

What the image earns

Every mid-May Rockport throws Motif No. 1 Day, drawing about 2,000 people to one little red shed in an afternoon. The shack is now one of the most reproduced images in American art, on calendars, postcards and gallery walls worldwide.

Why it worked

Rockport did not inherit its fortune, it manufactured one. When granite and cod ran out, the town chose a resource it had overlooked, the light and the painters it drew, and made them official in 1921. Then it concentrated everything on a single unrepeatable icon: one red fish house, painted so often it became a brand.

By rebuilding that shack plank for plank after the 1978 blizzard, the town made clear its future ran as much on the image as on the working harbor below.
