What Tabernas is known for
Tabernas is a town of about four thousand people in what is usually called mainland Europe’s only desert. It is known for a leftover Wild West that still stands, the sets film crews built in the 1960s, now the best known reason outsiders come. Three Wild West parks share it, and all three are private ventures, separately owned, not municipal.
A desert that doubled for the American West
The desert here was long settled: in the sixteenth century Tabernas was a Morisco town of about 1,800 under an Almohad castle. In the 1960s its badlands doubled for the American West. Sergio Leone shot his Dollars trilogy there, and designer Carlo Simi built a full frontier town, Yucca City. Then the boom passed.
Tabernas could not live on filmmaking alone: a few thousand people in a real desert, dryland olive country around them, and no guarantee another crew would return. A plywood frontier either earns its upkeep or goes for salvage.
The illusion was never torn down
Extras from The Good, the Bad and the Ugly bought the Yucca City set after the 1966 shoot and ran it as an attraction, and the park dates its opening to 1974. The Catalan hotel group founded by Jose Maria Rossell acquired the site in 1979 and reopened it as Mini Hollywood. Three rival Wild West parks now stage gunfights and stunts, daily in season.
What the sets earn
The fake frontier is now the town’s visitor economy. Oasys MiniHollywood’s owners announced ten million euros in 2023 for an expansion to 2026, targeting more than 300,000 visitors a year. An airport is about forty minutes away and Almeria, a city of about 200,000, thirty-five.
Why it worked
It worked because the props became the point. When the boom passed, the town had a borrowed frontier and a landscape few places in Europe could match. Private operators, not the municipality, kept the sets alive, competing against each other rather than consolidating, and the desert kept its second career.
The same badlands host the Plataforma Solar de Almeria, Europe’s largest concentrating solar research and test centre, on 103 hectares inside the municipality: two industries built on the same asset, relentless sun.
