What Saratoga Springs is known for

Saratoga Springs is known for its summer racing meet. The town began as a spa, drawing 19th century visitors to mineral waters, and later anchored its whole identity to a racetrack it billed as the oldest sporting venue in the country. The 2024 summer meet topped one million in paid attendance in a town of roughly 28,000 people.

A cure that could be copied

Saratoga Springs began as a cure. Visitors came to drink and bathe in mineral waters they believed would heal them, but a cure is seasonal and easily copied. Spa towns rose and fell across the country, and fame built on water alone could fade just as fast.

The town had to turn a fashionable seasonal habit into a permanent reason to come. Mineral water alone could not carry it through the rest of the year, and the resort crowd was famously fickle.

One meet, and everything around it

In 1863 John Morrissey, a boxing champion and future congressman, held the town’s first race meet. He opened the Saratoga Race Course a year later. The town wrapped the season in everything else a visitor might want: springs, grand hotels and, later, a performing arts center.

Rather than spread its bets, Saratoga concentrated them into a short, intense summer meet and made it a national event.

What tourism earns

The 2024 summer meet topped one million in paid attendance. Across the year Saratoga County generated 902 million dollars in visitor spending, about 32 percent of the entire Capital-Saratoga region, whose visitors paid roughly 98 million dollars in state and local taxes. A town of roughly 28,000 runs a tourism economy that cities ten times its size would envy.

Why concentration worked

Saratoga had other cards, from Skidmore College to a summer arts center. It anchored its identity to a single institution no rival could copy, then made the season deliberately short and intense so that serious fans felt they had to visit at least once.

By funneling a crowd roughly 35 times its own population through town in a single summer meet, Saratoga converted a fickle seasonal habit into year-round economic gravity that still carries the town. Concentration, not diversification, was the move.
