Rothsay is the Prairie Chicken Capital of Minnesota. One of the largest concentrations of the bird can be found on the meadows in the Rothsay region. Prairie chickens are famous because they represent a historical part of Minnesota History. Prairie Chickens moved ahead of the settlers to inhabit the prairies of Minnesota as they settled. This is why Rothsay chose the Prairie Chicken as the creative focal point of their city.
Having the largest prairie chicken keeps Rothsay, MN on the map. The Largest Prairie chicken is advertised from the road and two gas stations prosper heavily from the extra traffic. The World’s Largest Prairie Chicken is little more than a giant creative statue that reflects Rothsay’s history. It is Rothsay creative focal point. The prairie chicken stop may be Rothsay, MN’s only tourist attraction, but it is rated 3.5 stars on Tripadvisor for being little more than a statue of a chicken.
People crave the new and different. This creative statue is just that, well not new NOW but definitely still different! Local entrepreneurs then did what they do best. They founded businesses (gas stations in this case) nearby that the town and their family can profit from long into the future from the creative focal point. Art Fosse knew this and that is why he rallied the community to build this statue. Permanent install like these would go on to represent communal and creative focal points for many small Minnesota Towns for many years.
Building artwork throughout a city can help a city profit a little bit over a long time. A small city or town on a budget should consider what makes their town unique and build a statue representing it. Art work lasts and it interests people for decades to come. Make a creative focal point, it is worth it.
