What happened when the trolls became findable

By Matthew Pfeifer, Creative City Developments · Updated September 2026

A Minnesota lake town commissioned troll sculptures, then layered a treasure hunt on top. The search data shows exactly what that produced, and one thing it did not.

Fix first

If your town has commissioned an attraction and cannot answer the question how many people searched for it last month, that is the gap. The sculpture is the easy part. Being the answer when somebody types its name is the part nobody budgets for.

The situation

Detroit Lakes sits in a region where lakes are not scarce, which is the hardest position a destination can hold.

Every town nearby has water, a beach and a summer season. When the obvious thing to market is the thing your neighbour also has, marketing it harder does not help. The town needed something unrepeatable within a day’s drive.

What the town did

It commissioned sculptures, then made them a route rather than a stop.

Thomas Dambo builds giants from recycled timber and salvaged lumber, with local volunteers. Detroit Lakes placed them so that finding them means moving through the area, and the trail extends beyond the town to Fargo in North Dakota and to Perham and Frazee in Minnesota. A treasure hunt was layered on top, anchored at Alexa.

That last decision is the one most towns skip. A single sculpture produces a photograph. A route produces a day.

What we did

We built and maintained the page that answers the searches these sculptures generate.

Not a press release and not a listing. The page that ranks when somebody two hours away, already in the car, types where are the trolls in detroit lakes.

One page, one job

A single canonical article carrying the whole subject, rather than the attraction scattered across a news post, an events page and a PDF map. Search engines consolidate authority onto one URL. Three half pages compete with each other.

Answer the hunt, not just the sculptures

Seventy three separate queries are people looking for the map, the route and the locations. That is the visit being planned in real time, and it is a completely different intent from somebody reading about public art.

Name the individual trolls

People do not only search the category. Alexa alone draws 552 searches a year at an average position of 1.8, because she has a name a person can type. An unnamed sculpture is a category. A named one is a destination.

The results

17,675 clicks and 187,936 impressions in sixteen months, with most of the demand captured in the top three results.

The two highlighted bars matter more than their size suggests. One is a sculpture searched by name. The other is somebody asking where to go. Both are people who have already decided to come.

What transfers to another town

The three transferable moves
MoveWhy it works
A commissioned attraction is not a found attractionThe sculptures existed either way. What changed was whether the search demand they created had somewhere to land.
The hunt is worth more than the objectsA route generates searches for a map, for locations, for how many there are and where to start. Those searches are the visit being planned.

The honest condition

This works when the attraction is genuinely unrepeatable within a day’s drive. Detroit Lakes had that. A town that installs a mural and expects the same result will not get it, because a mural is not a reason to drive two hours.

What we have not solved

The visitors arrive, and at the moment they decide where to spend money the town is not the answer.

Where the traffic converts, and where it does not

Source: Google Search Console. Local dining queries served 392 impressions and produced zero clicks.

That is the fourth move in our own playbook, give a reason to stay, and on this project it is unfinished. The traffic is real. Converting it into local spending is the next piece of work, and it belongs to the businesses on the street as much as to the listing.

Uniqueness was not found in the mountains above the town. It was built on the streets below them.Only Here, Volume One

Frequently asked questions

How many trolls are in Detroit Lakes?

The trail includes several Thomas Dambo sculptures in and around Detroit Lakes, and extends to Fargo, Perham and Frazee. The current locations and count are best confirmed with the local trail map, which is what most visitors search for first.

Where does the Detroit Lakes troll hunt start?

The treasure hunt is anchored at Alexa, which is also the most searched individual sculpture on the trail at an average Google position of 1.8.

Does commissioning public art actually bring visitors?

It brings searches, which is the measurable leading indicator. In this case the sculptures generated 406 distinct ranking queries and 17,675 clicks in sixteen months. Whether those searches convert to local spending depends on work that happens after the visitor arrives.

How do you measure whether an attraction is working?

Search demand is the cheapest honest proxy. If nobody is searching for your landmark by name, it is not yet a destination, whatever it cost to build.
